WHAT IS AYURVEDA?

Ayurveda, or Indian Traditional Medicine, dates back around 5000 years. The word translates to ‘Science of Life’, meaning how we as individuals interact with the universe/environment around us.

Ayurveda explains that the 5 basic elements of nature – Ether/Space; Air; Fire; Water & Earth – are manifest in the human body as 3 humors or ‘Dosha’:
VATA is the combination of Ether/Space and Air;
PITTA is the combination of Fire and Water; and
KAPHA is the combination of Earth and Water.

The Dosha each have important roles within the body governing different biological, psychological and physiopathological functions of the body, mind and consciousness, like the nature of the elements each represents.
